Often grown as an additive to coffee, Mucuna pruriens var-utilis, kafé go bouwo, is especially recommended for people with rheumatism.  It is roasted in an earthen pit, pounded with a mortar and pestle, and added to regular coffee.  The pod of the main species, M. pruriens, is covered with tiny barbed spines which contain a highly irritating proteolytic enzyme, mucunian.  This variety is used for worms.  Two or three pods are put in a quart of honey, shaken well, and taken by the spoonful.  A little cod fish is eaten a while before taking the medicine.
