Montserrat, Guadeloupe, Marie Galante, Dominica, Martinique, St. Lucia, St. Vincent, Grenada, Barbados, Greater Antilles, Mesoamerica, South America.

Also a cultivated ornamental.  Purple and green-leafed forms.
