West Indian endemic.
Very common tree of all levels of the rainforest, forming dense populations on high ridges and steep slopes, especially at high elevations.
Saba, St. Kitts, Nevis, Montserrat, Guadeloupe, Dominica, Martinique, St. Lucia, St. Vincent, Grenada, Greater Antilles (Cuba, Hispaniola, Puerto Rico).
This is the red form.  Two distinct forms (red, white) which are possibly 2 species. See Prestoea white form
