Native to Tropical Africa, Yemen, Indian Ocean.

Widely naturalized. Mainly planted for cover, green manure and erosion control in coffee, tea and rubber plantations in the tropics and subtropics

This taxon has frequently been confused wiith Indigofera spicata - the differences between the two taxons are described in Tropical Forages.
Our species has mainly 7-11 leaflets and the pods have a conspicuous beak.
