Indigenous quite rare high-climbing woody vine (of moist forest), forest rivers and open spots on the highest peaks.
St. Kitts, Guadeloupe, Marie Galante,  Martinique, St. Lucia, St. Vincent, Greater Antilles, Trinidad, Mesoamerica, South America.
The hairs on the pod cause irritation to the skin. This species is similar to M. sloanei  
Seeds like these are often found on Atlantic beaches - they could be from here or washed up from other islands.
