Indigenous with 2 clear types.
1. Rare tree of upper level of semi-evergreen seasonal forest and lower montane rainforest
2. Quite common shrub/tree of upper level of lower montane, montane and cloud montane rainforest.
Montserrat, Guadeloupe, Dominica, Martinique, St. Lucia, St. Vincent, Grenada, Tobago, Trinidad, Mesoamerica, South America.
The population at higher elevations looks very different vegetatively but apparently is the same species.Certainly deserves a subspecies designation!
The local name bwadfè applies to the lower elevation big tree form.
