Antigua, Guadeloupe, Marie Galante, Martinique, St. Lucia, Greater Antilles, Tobago, Mesoamerica, South America.
Differs from the more common Nymphaea ampla by having straight edge to the leaf which is purple underneath and by having nocturnal flowers. When this species is found (commonest  around Vieux Fort) it is often mixed with Nymphaea ampla.
