Indigenous common herb of open and semi-open dry and moist areas.
St. Martin, Antigua, Saba, St. Eustatius, Guadeloupe, Marie Galante, Martinique, St. Lucia, St. Vincent, rest  of West Indies, North America, Mesoamerica, South America.

Very similar to Leptochloa panicea but 2-8 flowers, a few with awns, in each spikelet.
Identification should be done on young inflorescences as flowers fall off the older ones.
