Indigenous quite rare herb of semi-evergreen seasonal forest.
St. Martin, Antigua, Saba, St. Eustatius, St. Kitts, Guadeloupe, Dominica, Martinique,St. Lucia, St. Vincent, the Grenadines, Grenada, rest of West Indies, Mesoamerica, South America.
Very similar to another subspecies but 9 or more spikelets on each branch.
There is a cultivated variegated form.
