Bwa moudong combined with mawi pouwi (Petiveria alliacea) is used to wash fishing boats to protect them against the devil of the sea. Some of this combination is put in a bottle to take along on the voyage. This tree is reported to groan at night and advice is given to put a shilling there before you take a piece of root for medicine. A little piece of the root is put into your mouth to make you disappear so you can travel long distances instantly without being seen.
